Homemade Hamster Toys?

One of your hamster's favorite activities is playing with toys, especially those hamster toys that give him a chance to have a workout or those where he can hide in.

Although you can buy some ready made hamster toys such as hamster motorcycle, and hamster nest from pet stores. Hamster wheel is the only one that you have to buy, the rest of the toys you can actually DIY.

Materials for Homemade Hamster Toys
You should not use anything that have sharp edges or toxic substances. Here are some common materials that you can use to make your own original toys:
  • Paper bags
  • Cardboard boxes such as cereal boxes
  • Toilet paper tubes or paper towel tubes
  • Wrapping paper rolls
  • Egg cartons
  • Apple tree branch, or other wood which is dry, clean and not in any way rotting
Some Homemade Hamster Toys Ideas
  • Put toilet paper tubes or paper towel tubes in the cage, you hamster will like to crawl in and out of these paper tubes. You can even join some paper tubes together to form a maze.

  • Gather a few small empty cardboard boxes and stick them on top of each other in decreasing sizes to make a climbing tower for your hamster.

  • Snap off a apple tree branch and put it into your hamster cage, your hamster will enjoy using it as a climbing frame and gnawing on it.

  • Make a swinging toilet paper tube rolls by hanging the toilet paper tube loosely and let your hamster swing like a Tarzan.

  • Empty cereal boxes or egg cartons make lovely nesting boxes for hamsters, just cut some holes on the boxes and let your hamster burrows into them.
Any more interesting ideas? Make sure it is safe for your hamster though.

I think hamsters & Mooky are like kids they like the boxes their toys come in more than the toys themselves!

My hamsters love homemade ladders and they all also love tunnels connected to their cages! They love cut dog leashes tied to their cage to play hamster tug o war, Be sure to remove the rope if they knawed on it to much! They also love boxes, rmpty cups and containers, 2 cm water filled bathtubs and much more!

I use all of these PLUS: I took a paper bowl, put it upside-down and cut a hole in it. Then, I filled it with torn tissues. My hammies loved it! Also I took two paper cups, cut a hole in the bottom of both, and taped them together bottom-to-bottom.

Great advice!
I'll try the tube as soon as my toilet paper (or paper towel) ends.

I made the best toy for my 2 sister dwarf hamsters. (Angel and Daisy)
I took 3 toilet paper rolls and cut a hole on 2 of the rolls on top centre of 2 of the rolls. It cost me NOTHING! I just decorated it with non-toxic markers in the colour theme of their cage. It took me 15minutes and the hamsters have endless fun!

I was looking for something for my hamsters to play with around the house, so i stuck a cardboard box in with them but their little feet kept slipping on the smooth surface. Then I remembered the cat scratcher I had. It is all cardboard but has a really rough surface for scratching. Mine is a wedge shape and I turned it on end and my hamsters loved it! they had about 1 1/2 feet high to climb!

hey, PLEASE PLEASE help me :( i've been taking care of two hamsters for the past 3 days and i have never take care of them before. they are winterwhites and im not even sure of their gender! i tried to check several times but its jus so hard. this morning i noticed one of the hamsters suddenly got fatter and im not sure whether its pregnant or jus fat cos it keeps eating. however, there are symptoms like it building a nest, trying to steal and hide food under the bedding and stuff and its more restless now. the thing im worried about is, they climb and sorta nibble(or sniff, i dun know, but i think its nibbling) each other, on the ears, and their hind legs area. this would last for about, 15-20 seconds? and the contradicting thing is they get along so well too! they snuggle and cuddle together so closely and sleep together. wtf man. please help me i have no frikkin idea what i should dooooooooo. :(

Your hamsters may be opposite genders which is why the snuggling and nibbling occurs. It could also be that they are still young so they're teething (which causes all the nibbling) and not used to sleeping alone (hamsters sleep with their litters when they are young) so they rely on each other as "family". Hamsters like building their owns nests and hiding food. It's just their nature so don't be too worried about that. The restlessness is probably just the hamsters' way of telling you that they aren't comfortable in their home or location (I may be wrong about this). I'm not sure about the fattening so you might want to bring your hamster to the vet or weigh it every couple days to see how much weight it's gaining.
