What is the Black Bear Hamster?

Beautiful jet-black fur, offset by white markings, is the trademark of the Black
Bear Hamster
. It is not a different species but it is a nickname which has been adopted by some for this black mutation of the Syrian Hamster.

They are known as European Black Bear too because most of them are descendants of European show hamsters. They tend to be somewhat larger and calmer than typical golden or Teddy Bear Hamsters, although they are all the same species.

Don't you think they look like a mini black bear? Please don't feed they honey ok.

my Cleo is black with a white stripe down her belly. By the way, I've fed her honey before lol. (to be precise honey diluted with water- as a treat).

Gazard said...

No worry, there are hamster treat that contains honey. But pure honey might stuck in their cheek pouch, which is very dangerous.

yeah I know, that's why I diluted it with water so there's just a hint of honey flavour. :D

I just got my little Tetch (cos he looks like a little mad hatter) and he crawled right up to me and into my hand <3 so cute! I say "he" tentatively though, bc I can't figure out Tetch's gender. He's pretty small still, I just want to know how big he'll get and how to tell their sex. Any help would be great!

They can grow up to 15cm. To help you identify hamster gender, read this.

In my experience, black bear hamsters are the best hamsters in the world - they live forever and they are sooo friendly!! And i've had three! Anyway - 6 inches long, and once your ham is like 6 mnths if it doesnt have big pink pouches sticking out of its bum its a girl!!!

I bought two the other day for my daughters. I wanted to keep them together. They are just weaned from the same litter. But I've been reading they are solitary. Does anyone have two together in the same cage?

I just got a black bear hamster last night and she is so hyper is she suppose to be like that?

Gazard said...

Don't worry Kayla, hamsters like to spread their scent in new environment to mark territory. She is probably doing that.

This is Tetch's mommy again. So we found out the hard way what sex Tetch is... One day I was cleaning the top part of the cage and babies came out! I screamed and luckily my husband saved them without touching them. She had five, only one of which we could find a home for. So we just kept the rest. Tetch and her daughter Lola share a cage, but they fight sometimes so I'm getting Lola her own home. They still always sleep cuddled together. Then there are two boys (DEFINITELY boys, lol)Harvey and Ravi, who really seem to enjoy each other's company. They share the wheel, and sleep cuddled up. Not sure if I should separate them. Then there's Binky, my husband's favorite, who would not be alive if not for him. Binky was born missing a hand and is smaller. But he lives alone because he's bitey. We want to get him caught up to the others, who can all be picked up, Tetch will even just sit on my arm for a long time. Any advice on how to make a bitey (and surprisingly mobile) hammie friendly enough to handle with bare hands?
(sorry for the big story, but everyone seems to love animals here so I thought it would make a cute story)

That is sweet story, keep them coming! For Binky, check out tips for training hamster.

So I got two blackbear hamsters for Christmas and one has already gotten "lost". they were litter mates so they got along well. My concern is for the one I have left. Is she lonely? I know they're solitary creatures, but I am I being too "human" in thinking that she misses Martin?

Gazard said...

Your hamster will be perfectly fine staying alone. What she need the most is your attention, not other hamsters.

We just lost our black bear. Help! Our nine year old is so sad. We have a poodle (nine pounds) but door is closed in her room. Came in today and cover was off. Could hamster have done it> Should we try honey and water as a bait? Would appreciate advice. Is he gone?

Hi debra, this post might help. Please try your best.

Hi Gazard,

My partner and I recently acquired another Hamster (We have a habit of rescuing all animals), our new addition is a Black Bear Hamster and webought it from the Pet Shop because it had a really sore looking eye and didnt seem very well looked after.

Now that we have had chance to clean Her poorly eye up we have noticed a bad scratch below the eye which is healing very nicely.

Our biggest concern for 'Blackberry' as she has been named is her other eye, it seems to be pointing in the wrong direction and unlike any other hamster I have ever handled seems to have to look at things by turning its head sideways.

Blackberry seems happy enough but we think that she may be very nearly blind.

Any advice on how to diagnose her eye sight a little better than observational tests with food?

I am gonna get either a teddy bear hamster or a black bear hamster. They are so cute! Normally you can only get exotic hamsters like this from breeders but I found a pet store that sells exotic fish and exotic hamsters!!!

I got a BB Hamster I named Tux. Yes, short for Tuxedo. He sleeps weird, in a horizonal tube with his head hanging over the edge of a verticle tube, just dangeling. Is this normal? I have had several other hamsters who have not slept like that.

Gazard7 said...

Hi gene_blankenship, I think Tux just has a unusual sleeping habit, nothing to worry about.

CrimsonAce said...

I dunno if this is a little late or not but I've been begging my parents to death to get me a Hamster, what breed would you recommend and well, why?

Zina said...

We just got a darling little BB hamster. Named her Cocoa. She is so darn cute. She is very hyper also and squirmy to hold. She is very sweet, but is giving little soft nips just because we only got her last night and I feel she is still a bit nervous. Based on our last experience with a TB hamster I know this is normal. They need lots of quick interaction and times with human hands. Talking to them and letting them sleep when sleeping is very important. Did not realize we were getting such a special breed.
Just how long does this brred live???

Gazard7 said...

Hi Zina, black bear hamster's average life span is 2.5-4 years, just like other syrian hamsters.

My Black Bear hamster Onyx just jumped from my hands to the ground. After much chasing I caught Onyx, but I am worried about her. She seems very shaken up. Will she be okay? BTW she is new, I got her yesterday.
