Hamster can be found in any pet shops nowadays, five species are sold as pets although there are more species in the wild. The most common hamster is the Syrian Hamster, experts say the Syrian is the hamster to get for a younger child. Because of its larger size, it is less likely to be injured by accidentally squeezing.
Dwarf Campbell Russian hamsters is smaller then Syrian, and more social.
Dwarf Winter White hamsters change color in cold weather to a shade of white, they are slightly smaller then Dwarf Campbell Russian.
The smallest hamster is the Roborovski. These tiny creatures are very fast on their feet and very entertaining. They live longer too.
Last but not the least, is the Chinese hamster, which has a very sweet temperament and will rarely bite.Which you think is the cutest?

ReplyDeleteTotally
THEY ARE SO CUTE AREN,T THEY.
ReplyDeletethey are cute aren,t they
ReplyDeleteI was told that if a hamster has red eyes that it is blind. Is this true?
ReplyDeleteThat is not true, albino hamsters have red eyes but they are definitely not blind.
ReplyDeletewhich are the cutest? well the only kind of hamster i have NOT had is roborovski - i have to say they do look the most entertaining.
ReplyDeletei now have a chinese. as you say they are v sweet natured. he is the only hammy i ever had that i know for sure i can put my hand in when he's sleeping and not get bitten! no way would i do that with a syrian hamster..!
i used to have a campbells and a winter white that lived together. the campbells hated being picked up and threatened to bite. the winter white was already fully grown when i got him but incredibly sweet tempered. unfortunately he died of old age about 4 months later which meant i had a campbells hamster alone who was very vigorous. e.g. if i poked a chopstick through the bars he would seize hold of it with his teeth and then you could do this trick of picking him up with the chopstick as he never let go! that one ESCAPED never to be seen again ...
i put your blog in my hamster links on mine
beware it is not a hamster blog i am keeping. though i talk about them all the time
Gledwood: Your Russian Campbell hamster is aggressive, heheh!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link up.
I love hamsters. My family has had hamsters and mice prolly since 2000. We first started out with Stuart the field mouse who lived for a day or two. By the time we had gotten the whole cages and what not ready, he was dead. So my mom came home with Millton who was an albino mouse. We were new to rodents than and when he got mites, my mom when to the pet store and the man had told her to use cat and dog flea and tick spray. She had listened to him and millton died hours later. We than new what mites were and took a break from the mice because we felt that we had no real luck with them. The year is now 2001 and we had gotten our first hamster, Lucy who is a Whinter White Russian Dwarf, the cutest and littlest thing you have ever seen in your life. She lived for a good two years until she got wet tail in 2003 and still being new to hamsters, we didn't know what to do which lead to her death in time of waiting to see what would happen. We later found out that there were two dieases called wet tail and dry tail and keep a good amount of medication for mites, wet and dry tail for any signs of what might look like the disease. After Lucy we got I think a Pudding Winter White Russian Dwarf Hamster named Ginger. She was a sweeties but no where near as cute as Lucy. We had found out from Lucy that Russian Dwarf hamsters are easily stressed if handled to often so we didn't handle her as much as we handled Lucy yet one month it was as if she spazzed out or something and got dry tail and did the whole funny breathing, lotta water drinking, staying in one place thing. We gave her medicine and she was back to normal. She did this about once a month until one day we discovered a lump on her. We took her to the vet and discovered that she had a tumor on her back. The vet said she would last the next week. About four months later, she finally passed away. The tumor didn't bother her, it was as if it wasn't even there. Now it's 2004 and we decided to get a mouse and a hamster. We bought another cage, and got an albino mouse named Olivia and a gray chinese dwarf hamster named Bob. The pet shoppe told us that Chinese Dwarf Hamsters are hard to breed and that we should be lucky we have one. A few weeks after we had gotten them, we found out that Olivia was Oliver and Bob was Bridgett. Bridgett had five kids. We bought two more cages and decided to keep three of them. It's hard to give them away. I could barely give one to my best friend who was in 5th grade at the time. The original names of the hamsters were Tubby, Luke, Leha, Sofie, and King Charles. We kept Tubby, Leha and King Charles who were renamed Buddy, Star and Timmy. My friend took Luke and renamed him Streak and my Literature teacher took Sofie and renamed her Velvet. Velvet was the first one to die due to being left in the pocket of a sweater and being eaten by a cat. Than Bridgett died in the summer of 2006, Timmy in Novemember of 2006, Oliver in March of 2007 and Star today (13th of August 2007). Buddy and Streak are still alive and in good condition. The hamsters originally shared cages until we knew the gender of them and had them seperated which is when we bought our third cage. Weeks later, the boys started fighting and had to be seperated which lead us to buying our fourth cage. After Bridgett died, Star had her own cage. After Timmy died my mom cleaned the cage and got it ready for a new hamster and sure enough, 10 minutes after Timmy had died she came in my room and said,"Come on, lets go to the pet store and get a new hamster." Never let your mom clean a cage and become motivated to get a new hamster. This is where Sunny came from. My little ball of sunshinen to lighten my day, or so I thought the first few days I had her. With in the months, she grew fat and evil and can only be picked up when she is least expecting it. She is a Sapphire Winter White Russian Dwarf Hamster. After Oliver had died, we waited a good few weeks and got Dorothy, our first Gerbil. She is a beautiful golden color and has huge back legs so I'm guessing she's more closely reltated to the kangaroo rat but I'm not really sure. So now we have Dorothy *Dottie*, Sunny and Buddy. All great pets!
ReplyDeleteWoa! i used to have a winter white hammie named Lucy too :O she passed away though, but now i got a tiny lil russian female dwarf hamster named Bella. shes really calm. she'll sleep anywhere and shes not really as rough as Lucy :)
ReplyDeleteTake good care of Bella, you are lucky to get such as calm hamster though.

ReplyDeleteI've been a hamster owner for about five years. I've had every breed but the Chinese. I actually have five baby Dwarf Campbell Russians right now that are a couple weeks old. I've had three litters from hamsters of this breed and I absolutely love them. I have two Roborovski hams right now and I just found out that she is now pregnant and I'm excited about that! Right now I have 10 hamsters (Tinkle, Chuck Norris, Mr. and Mrs. Sergeant Major Poopenheimer, Princess Peach and her five babies), 2 rats (Penelope and Squeak), and a hedgehog (Cuddles). They are all so much fun and they are so spoiled!

ReplyDeleteAll my dwarf campbells are aggressive critters! Shu bites Chelsea more than she bites Beau. And Beau bites Chelsea cause he's frightened and he thinks it's Shu.
ReplyDeleteSo I have to put Chelsea to live in a yellow bucket!
And then when Chelsea healed, she's grown bigger than Beau! One day I tried to put them all together...now that she bites Beau but still got bitten by Shu!
And so Chelsea have to stay in the yellow bucket until Mum agreed to get me a tank! They just got on my nerves!!! But no worries, cause they're separated and still healthy:) So this is the story of my dwarf campbells...they are very social indeed...
I had 1 hamster named Liskey and we let her play with white cotton balls. About a month later, we got another white hamster, I named it Jodi. At first I put Jodi in the same cage with Liskey, but when liskey saw her she attacked her. We read at a store that they could be raised together, bur that didnt work out.Now their in seprate cages. And you know how i said Liskey could play with cotton balls? Maby when we put the white hamster with Liskey, Liskey thought she was a moving cotton ball.Their the same sex,and their dwarfs but I guess some things just dont work out. Their cages are next to eachother so they can talk, and play, and maby have a nose fight but thats it.
ReplyDeleteP.S.If you have two hamsters and put them together and they fight, dont waste time trying to find a way for them to stop, just seperste them before it gets out of hand.

ReplyDeleteI have a smallish black hamster by the name of Onyx. I think she is a black bear hamster, but I can,t be sure... she is black and very very gentle, she has not bitten me once at all although she does jump. She is about 9 weeks old, I got her two days ago. What is she?
ReplyDeleteHi Payton, does Onyx look like this black bear hamster?
ReplyDeleteCan you breed dwarfs with larger breed hamsters?
ReplyDeleteMelanie, interbreeding is a bad idea!
